Greece, 2069
March 2024
In a hundred years from now, Greece will likely become a desert. Blue waters and white houses will be a distant memory of the past, and yet the remnants of a previous, happier life will still exist in old objects and remains of no-longer existing animals. People of the future will find a way to adapt to their new reality, reaching for a more traditional way of living. Due to a lack of basic necessities like food and water, they will be collectively malnourished and their skin will constantly be scorched from the brutal sun. Despite all of this, people will discover a sense of resilience and hope which will allow them to push through the hardships of this new reality.
In the past, humanity looked towards tradition in order to gain survival tactics from past civilizations. In fifty-five years from now, on the brink of extinction, tradition will also revive through clothing. Greece, 2069 reveals a new woman, one that uses her heritage as optimism for the future. Greek clothing from the 18th and 19th centuries influences fashion through accessories, patterns, colors, silhouettes and prints. However, influences from over the course of the past 250 years also coalesce, blending the old and older to form something new.

Lykeion ton Ellinidon, an incredible organization preserving Greek traditional culture - specialising in the fields of dance and dress. I spoke to Ms. Diana and Ms. Tania, who showed me traditional clothing; this inspired my designs.
-
Dr. Chiara Cavallo, University of Amsterdam - a senior lecturer specializing in zooarcheology. Dr. Cavallo gave me her perspective on extinction, the future and how, as a society we should look to the past for solutions for the future.
